چکیده

The wood products industry is using herbicides to control competing vegetation, as well as fertilizers to increase growth in southern pine. In 1987, a longterm monitoring study was established to determine the growth potential of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) in the southeastern United States (Borders and Bailey 2001). Very intensive cultural practices were applied including intensive mechanical site preparation, completevegetationcontrolwithmultipleapplications of herbicides, annual high rates of nitrogen fertilization, and complete vegetation control plus annual fertilization. Borders and Bailey (2001) report that growth increased up to 270 percent in response to the intensive cultural treatments. Volume mean annual increment at age 12 for the trees receiving complete vegetation control plus annual fertilization was 325 to 490 ft. of wood per acre per year, growth rates which are comparable to the best loblolly pine growth anywhere. It was concluded that growth rates in loblolly pine plantations under conventional management in the southeastern United States (100 to

Juvenileimature Wood Transition in Loblolly Pine as Defined by Annual Ring Specific Gravity, Proportion of Latewood, and Microfibril Angle

The length of juvenility or number of years a tree produces juvenile wood at a fixed height can be defined by the age of the wood at which properties change from juvenile to mature wood. This paper estimates the age of transition from juvenile to mature wood based on ring specific gravity (SG), proportion of annual ring in latewood, and ring average microfibril angle (MFA). The threshold method...

Mid-Rotation Silviculture Timing Influences Nitrogen Mineralization of Loblolly Pine Plantations in the Mid-South USA

Intensively managed loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantations often develop nutrient deficiencies near mid-rotation. Common silvicultural treatments for improving stand nutrition at this stage include thinning, fertilization, and vegetation control. It is important to better understand the influence of timing fertilization and vegetation control in relation to thinning as part of improving the...

Effects of Intensive Silvicultural Treatments on Kraft Pulp Quality of Loblolly and Slash Pine

Intensive forest-management practices have been shown to greatly increase the growth rates of southern pines. A joint study was undertaken to evaluate the wood and pulp quality from fast-grown 14,year-old loblolly pine from the Piedmont and 17-year-old slash pine from the Coastal Plain. The properties were compared to 24-year-old plantation-grown controls. Three sets of chip samples, sawmill re...

Stand development and production dynamics of loblolly pine under a range of cultural treatments in north-central Florida USA

The objectives of this study were to examine the effects of stand development and soil nutrient supply on processes affecting the productivity of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) over a period approximately equal to a pulpwood rotation (18 years). The experiment consisted of a 2 x 2 factorial combination of complete and sustained weed control and annual fertilization treatments (C: control treatm...
